Common Emergency Issues

A pilot light will only go out if there is a problem with parts called thermocouples or thermopiles. They do not go out because of wind or some other external intervention. You might be able to relight it following the manufacturer’s instructions. However, it is likely it will go out again.

Next Step: Call us! Have the model and serial number handy. This information lets us know the capacity, size and age of your unit.

Solution: If parts are available to your specific unit, we will suggest a repair is all you need. If your heater is older than the average life of 8-12 years, a replacement might make more sense financially for you.

Water pooling or streaming out.

The average life of a water heater is 8-12 years. The only way to fix a water heater that is leaking is if it is leaking at a part or fitting. Water heaters are glass-lined units. Once the unit leaks from the tank itself it cannot be repaired and must be replaced.

If it’s leaking from a line on the top or the drain valve at the bottom, those leaks can be repaired.

Emergency Response

Popping sounds/rumbling:

This is usually caused by sediment build-up on the inside of the water heater. This calcification tends to build up over time. Draining or flushing the tank may help on a very short term basis, like a week or less. Once this happens, it’s probably time to replace the water heater or live with the sound. This is a sign that the unit is failing.

Loud banging/explosion noise:

This is a dangerous situation. You need to immediately turn off the gas to the water heater. What is happening is there, is a tear in the burner of the water heater and gas is escaping outside of the burner and exploding. The fix for this is to replace the entire burner. This part is specific to the brand and the specific model number of your current unit.

Same-Day Inspection

This is a sign that the water heater is failing. If rust appears while using hot water, the glass lined tank has been compromised.

Next Step: Call Bay Area Water Heaters. Have the model and serial number handy.

Solution: The water heater has lived its full life and will need to be replaced.

Emergency Service Reviews

Rapid Emergency Response Pierre C., Berkeley

Water heater failed unexpectedly late one evening causing a lot of unnecessary stress. From initial outreach all the way through to implementation they were terrific. Very fair price and high quality implementation. No nonsense. They do what they say and say what they do.

Same-Day Emergency Service Michael W., Fremont

Found my 13 year old water heater was leaking on Wednesday, and Bay Area Water Heaters took my call and was able to come out the following morning and replace the entire unit at an affordable cost in about an hour and 20 minutes. The technician was super thoughtful in explaining what he was doing and walked me through the new water heater.

24/7 Availability Christine J., South San Francisco

My water heater suddenly stopped working and I sent out a bunch of quote requests on Yelp. Chris answered quickly and we did a call to go over the situation. Chris gave me some options that I sat on for a few weeks since I was going on vacation. When I got back, I called Chris and his team came out the next day to do a replacement.

Swift Action Cindy K., Sunnyvale

We had a water heater ignition problem late at night. After bringing one guy to come try and fix it, it still wasn't working. So my husband reached out to this company late last night and they were able to come out first thing this morning at 8am! Leka installed our new water heater and he was wonderful. Really kind, quick, efficient and walked us through everything.

Rapid Response Time Patricia D., San Jose

We called as soon as we saw some water at the base of our old water heater. Turns out it was from 1998 and was failing. Bay Area Water Heaters were at our house a few hours later and installed a new one and removed the old one. Very professional and very efficient.
